Ex-convicts of Reddit, what was the toughest part of getting reacclimated to society?

  1. I only served a year about 10 years ago so was not the hardest transition. That being said, talking to new people in prison was either not wise or always came with a risk. Finding a Job made you feel like a real piece of shit because you almost always got rejected. Driving on the highway for the first time after was a real trip to haha.

  2. Just the transition from prison to society was tough. Going from being told what to do and when to do it then next day getting kicked to the curb with nothing. If you don't have family there to help you you're basically fucked.

  3. I’m Australian, we still haven’t.

  4. Getting used to people being rude as fuck frequently and general lack of respect. Prison is one of the most polite places as far as inmate to inmate interaction goes. You show respect to people because you either don't know what they are capable of or because you know and fear what they are capable of. No one wants to catch a toothbrush in the neck over scuffed shoes or because they let a gate shut on someone. People on the outside aren't used to having serious consequences for disrespectful behavior.

  5. My uncle was released after 25 years. I’ve seen him and although I don’t have his number. My mother was scrolling on her Facebook and saw a page with his name. It was nice looking at him liking pages and posting a whole bunch of pictures of meeting up with everybody. When I met him he had an iPhone he seemed to be adjusting well with technology and my current goal is to buy a VR headset so he can experience that. But when we were at the subway he tensed up when someone walked a bit too close to us and I hadn’t noticed but my mother and aunt did and moved him (it wasn’t crowded at all so there was room for the person to go around).

  6. The lack of community and friendships. When you're in prison, you're hanging with your boys 24/7. Playing basketball, dice, lifting weights, etc. In society everyone works 8 hours a day, has families, etc. The people that just 'hangout' all day are trouble. I've got a son now and refuse to let him grow up without a father.
