What video game was unexpectedly brilliant?

  1. Spiderman 2. It was a movie tie in so i was expecting it to be pretty bland but it turned out to be one of my favourite games.

  2. By all metrics the new DOOM should have been trash. The second reboot of a series of FPS’s from the 90’s that were only really known for playing very well at the time. Not to mention it was being made by a developer that hadn’t made a generally well received game since Quake 3, has lost its leader since the beginning in John Carmak, and was shipping a game with no review copies and a badly received beta. Nothing about that game indicated it would be good. And yet it was perfectly pased, the gameplay was excellent, and the story was so absurd and smart that it worked. That game should not exist.

  3. Portal. Complex puzzles and a fun AI companion/story

  4. Sleeping Dogs. I expected a shitty GTA rip off but it turned out to have super fun gameplay and great story. It's one of my all time favorite games honestly.

  5. I would say Minecraft, if not just for the fact that it has nearly limitless replayability.
    — TechnoJumbo

  6. Katanari Damacy. I bought the game with no expectations and was not disappointed at all.

  7. Titanfall 2. First game was decent, good for some multiplayer but got old quickly. The campaign in 2 was one of the best FPS single players I have ever played.

  8. Shadow of the Colossus. First time I heard about it I expected a boss-only action game from a bygone era. I was wrong. It's so much more.

  9. The World Ends With You Great gameplay and soundtrack

  10. Spec Ops: The Line. Went in expecting normal, brown military shooter. Came back with PTSD and bigger hatred for sand than Anakins.

  11. Stardew Valley
