Reddit, how do you feel about the legalization of prostitution?

  1. Legalisation would mean regulation. Making it safer for both parties involved.

  2. It’s legal to be a porn star. Where’s the line

  3. I believe that two consenting adults of sound mind should be able to enter into any contract or transaction they want, and the government should not be legislating morality.

  4. I feel like it's a necessity to make a dent in human trafficking.

  5. Prostitution was made legal in New Zealand in 2003, I was around 5 so I don't remember it being illegal, but it's not like we have prostitutes being shoved in our faces or anything. If the people want to fuck they want to fuck and if they don't they're not being forced into fucking a prostitute. While exploitation is still an issue I think it's widely agreed that regulation has been a good thing and has lead to sex workers feeling more able to report crimes etc. The Spinoff actually did a [really interesting short documentary about small town prostitution](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LbDPEkiLXA).

  6. There's a difference between decriminalisation and legalisation. Decriminalisation (see New Zealand) allows all people over the age of 18 to participate in sex work provided barrier contraception is used in such transactions. Legalisation (see The Netherlands) introduces regulation, which helps to protect those who are able to achieve the standards of regulation, but not those who aren't. For example, migrant sex workers in The Netherlands are often unable to register in the same way Dutch/EU workers can, so they end up working in much less safe conditions as a result, being forced out of safe areas. Ideally, I'd like to see decriminalisation, not least because that's what sex workers themselves are calling for, and they're the experts in this. Legalisation would be a step towards positive change, but it can be done better than some of the places which currently enforce that system.
