What had no hype but turned out to be great?

  1. The original Portal

  2. Shovel Knight. Yacht Club sent the Game Grumps a demo of a random level from the game. Looked good, but many people (myself included) assumed that was the best level and it was nowhere to go but down. It got funded, but there was little to no hype for it. Came out, became the only thing anyone talked about for at least a month. Picked it up myself, found that Pridemoore Keep was nowhere near the best level and the game is truly an indie gem.

  3. Minecraft... ... seriously, its only advertisements were by word of mouth. It became the second best selling game of all time next to Tetris.

  4. What We Do in the Shadows. Probably the best movie I saw last year (and the one I rewatch when I need a good laugh)

  5. Stardew Valley

  6. In NHL hockey, Martin St. Louis. If you know hockey, you know Martin St. Louis is going to be a Hall of Famer. At 5'8" he went completely undrafted. He was a solid college hockey player, but no one was biting because of his size. He finally got a tryout with the Ottawa Senators... and was cut. He then played in the IHL, a league, which I'm still not even sure if it exists...and he tore it up. The Calgary Flames take notice, and Marty gets a deal to play for the Flames' AHL affiliate--one step away from the big show. For 3 years he splits his time kicking ass in the AHL and getting called up to the Flames and being somewhat lackluster. The Flames end up buying out his contract, and he becomes a free agent. At this point, Tampa Bay swoops in, picks him up for LEAGUE MINIMUM PAY. Within the next 3 years, Martin St. Louis is a point per game player in the NHL, and he's kicking ass. He wins the Art Ross trophy for most points in a season by a player twice. He wins a Stanley Cup. He's a goddamn legend for Tampa Bay. This dude was awesome.

  8. Animation that's been coming out recently. Nobody cared when Bojack Hoarseman, Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls were first announced. I honestly thought all of these were going to flop
