People of Reddit who wear glasses, what was it like the first time you got them and what are some problems that come with having glasses?

  1. Can't just lay down on a pillow when watching TV cause your glasses will shift off your nose and another downside is being very hot after a run or whatever and the glasses fogging up, thus not being able to see. Same for rain, or when it's very cold outside and entering a warm space.

  2. I remember looking outside at a far away tree and being able to see the leafs. It was magical...

  3. You (normally) lose your vision gradually over time and don’t generally notice it as a kid; you just come to accept that as how people view the world normally. When you get glasses for the first time, if your vision is terrible like mine was, you have a very startling realization that everything isn’t a large blur - I repeatedly put them on and took them off looking at how different everything was. As for problems, not too many. If you’re an adult people generally don’t care if you wear glasses - kids on the other hand... The only thing that bugs me about them is how frequently I have to clean them, and how bad my vision is when I first get up in the morning/before I put them on. Also, don’t get smaller frames/lenses with the belief that they’ll be less noticeable. Having a larger field of view without turning your head because you went with larger frames/lenses, is way better than trying to hide the very obvious fact that you wear glasses.

  4. The biggest problem with glasses is that the lenses scratch and get dirty. When they're dirty you can just clean them, but when they scratch they're going to drive you insane until you replace the lenses.

  5. I was driving home and there's this hill I drove past every day for years. Just a green hill. Turns out the hill was covered in trees but my eyesight was so bad I hadn't noticed the trees, they'd all blurred together. It was incredible, I pulled over and cried. There's all sorts of niggly little problems but they're nothing to complain about when the alternative is blindness lol.

  6. I was a preteen and my vision was always blurry. I never thought it was a problem until my school held a free vision and glasses event. The entire time I thought my vision was the norm and everyone saw the world as I did. Once I had my free prescription and went waited the week or two to actually receive the glasses putting them on was breathtaking. The entire time I was in the office of the eye doctor I was holding back tears, but lost it when I got in the car. I couldn’t believe I went so long without seeing as clearly as I do now. I was so mesmerized by how perfect everything looked. To this day I take off my glasses for an hour or two just to be fascinated when I put them back on and have no difficulty seeing 10 ft away from me. TLDR: Needed glasses. Cried when I first tried them. Never looked back Con: they get dirty and if you don’t have the right material to clean them it will drive you insane how the smudges never go away

  7. Being able to see the leaves on a tree far away was magical. Then came the constant need to clean them, wipe them, maintain them, constantly get new ones. And the fact that I can't just wear sunglasses.

  8. They give a slight fish eye affect when you first get them. Your peripheral vision is slightly warped. Things will look un level at times unless you look straight on at them. The fisheye goes away after a couple hours on the first day you get them. I wore contacts for about 15 years with no glasses. Allergies have pushed me towards glasses now. If I wear my contacts for a day, the fish eye will be back for about 10 mins the next day I wear glasses.
