Redditors with jobs most people don't even realize there is a need for, what do you do and how did you find it?

  1. I wash all the blood, globs of fat, flaps of skin, bone chips, and fecal matter off of surgical instruments. Then I assemble the instruments into sets for specific surgeries. Then I sterilize them, using either steam autoclaves or machines that utilize chemical sterilization. Then I load them up onto case carts and deliver them to the OR for the next day’s scheduled surgeries. It’s a hugely important job that no one even knows exists!

  5. Not me, but I know someone whose job it is to check the health and safety of public trees in parks and stuff. Basically walk around the city all day, look at trees and occasionally random people invite you to join their barbeque. And if it rains, stay in the office and do some paperwork. Sounds like a great job to me.

  6. Illicit drug destruction witness. A drug destruction team consists of authorised agency personnel, an independent scientist who assesses that what is being destroyed is what it is labelled to be, and an independent witness who ensures that all parties are do the right thing. I was the latter. I didn't find it. It found me. The team physically remains together for the duration of the process. Once the formalities are over, the actual drug destruction takes place with the team trotting off to a facility with an industrial incinerator. Drugs are chucked in, door closed, a few seconds later and it's no more, not even a little smoke trail.

  7. I drive a shuttle van for the railroads. Most people assume that a train just goes from place to place without stopping until it gets there. Truthfully, that's only on a good day. There are plenty of times trains get delays, have to work until the crew runs out of time, etc,... That's where I come in, hauling a fresh crew to a train, and bringing home the tired crew. If you've ever seen a full freight train just sitting somewhere, there's a strong chance its locked up and waiting on a crew to come for it. Another part of it is taking crews to motels to stay for a rest, so they can get up and take a train back to their home terminal. I know it's not that big of a job, but it keeps the railroads moving more than most realize. Also I found this job in a newspaper

  9. I have a friend who shreds paper. He goes to the hospitals, pharmacies, doctors offices, etc and gathers all the DPI (stuff with your name, address, medical records, anything that would violate HIPAA) and takes it to this massive paper shredder where they shred it into millions of tiny pieces then box it up and send it to get recycled into new paper products. Not sure how he got into that but yeah, that’s what he does.

  10. I handle the affairs of British Orders of Chivalry. It's mainly accounts and events management with a bit of general admin thrown in for good measure. Surprisingly to most people the British Monarchy have a website with a vacancies page. You just apply for it like any other job. But the offices are quite fancy and the perks are incredible.

  11. A member of my family goes to restaurants and drains their cooking oil waste for free and then converts it into energy with generators and sells it to the government.

  12. I deliver mail. Like nobody wants to do it but the pay is insane compared to my last job and the benefits and pension are awesome. You would never think of it but honestly they are so short staffed because nobody wants to do this as a career
