- Bicycles.
The transportation innovation they followed was animal-powered. Cars didn't exist yet. They're the reason we started paving roads.
When the car came along city planners and designers basically assumed the bicycle was useless now and designed all our streets for cars. By any reasonable measure they should've died out if not because they were made obsolete but because we purposefully designed them out of our roadways.
But boy were they ever stubborn, and now here we are and their use is surging in most of the developed world.
